The region’s best midget-aged hockey players are coming to Bedford next month.
At least 18 major midget and prep school teams from Atlantic Canada will compete in the first edition of The Chronicle Herald East Coast IceJam Hockey Tournament, the Nova Scotia EastLink Major Midget Hockey League announced Friday.
“This tournament will be a showcase of the best major midget hockey players in Atlantic Canada,” tournament chairman Geoff Newton said in a release.
“There hasn’t been a tournament in Nova Scotia of this size with this calibre of hockey for a long time.”
The BMO Centre on Hammonds Plains Road will play host to the tournament beginning Jan. 9 when the St. John’s Maple Leafs and St. John’s Privateers, two major midget teams from St. John’s, N.L., face off against Halifax-area teams from the Nova Scotia major midget circuit.
All eight teams from the Bluenose loop are taking part.
“Hockey Nova Scotia is so proud and pleased to be able to showcase hockey talent of this calibre,” Randy Pulsifer, president of Hockey Nova Scotia, said in the release.
“We are looking forward to what we know will be top-notch and spirited competition and trust everyone involved in this tournament will come away with positive experiences and memories.”
The QMJHL is also playing a part in the tournament.
“The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is always at the forefront of new ways to develop the sport,” commissioner Gilles Courteau said.
“The event will provide a tremendous platform for us to refine our recruiting in the Atlantic provinces and better evaluate future players.”
The tournament will feature 38 games and wraps up with the championship tilt on Jan. 13.
Newton said the Nova Scotia major midget league and the tournament committee are also finalizing plans for other events to take place during the tournament for the enjoyment of players, fans and scouts.
